Sergeant Major Schlüter in well-deserved retirement

26.07.2024

On June 28, 2024, the management of the "MGS" - Military History Collection PzBrig 21 was handed over from Sergeant Major Günter Schlüter to Captain Stephan Meyer. Reason enough to look back.

Sergeant Major Schlüter received special thanks for his outstanding achievements from the commander of the 21st Panzer Brigade. He received the "Commander's Coin" and was immortalized on the Roll of Honor. Another honor that has never been given in the General Field Marshal Rommel Barracks before was the naming of the area in front of the MGS as "Günter Schlüter Platz." This is unique because no street, building or square was named after a soldier or former soldier during their lifetime. Sergeant Major Schlüter was stationed in Augustdorf for over 45 years and was therefore a long-standing fixture in the barracks. Many soldiers even said that he was part of the inventory and could hardly believe that he was no longer part of the collection. Unfortunately, as with everything, nothing lasts forever and Sergeant Major Schlüter had to hang up his uniform when he turned 65. His immediate comrades said with affectionate mockery that he had to be dragged out of the barracks. And this cannot be completely dismissed. OSF Schlüter has not only gained his wealth of experience in military history from his numerous assignments in the barracks or from taking over the military history collection in 2017. In the years that followed, and this can be said with good reason, he turned this into a place where old comrades meet, young soldiers learn something about military history and traditions, and a meeting place for public relations work! History in general, but especially military history since the beginning of time, has always been a great hobby of his and he lived and loved the management of the MGS. No topic was too complex or too insignificant for him not to examine. It was almost impossible to catch the "walking military encyclopedia" on the wrong foot. We are all the more pleased to be able to continue to ask OSF Schlüter as a competent contact for advice and background knowledge. Many exhibits in the military history collection are beautiful to look at, but it is only with the historical context and classification as well as anecdotes that a museum becomes lively and eventful.
