At the end of the 1980s, the nuclear threat to Germany decreased as a result of the disarmament commitments made by the new Kremlin chief, Mikhail Gorbachev. The rethinking in Moscow sparked hope for more freedom in the GDR. When the Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989, the Bundeswehr began a new chapter in its history. On October 3, 1990, the NVA ceased to exist. Some of their soldiers are then taken on by the Bundeswehr. The unit's army was soon faced with new tasks: foreign operations began in the 1990s. First in Cambodia and Somalia, later in the Balkans and Afghanistan. But German soldiers are also deployed in the fight against piracy off the Horn of Africa. There are also challenges at home. During the flood action on the Oder in 1997, 15,000 soldiers from East and West Germany fought against the flood together.
