Despite all the upgrades, the A1 to A3 versions of the Leopard were based on the technological level of the 1960s. In order to keep the fleet of more than 2000 Leopards, which had cost between one and two and a half million DM each, competitive, a drastic modernization was implemented as a result.
The result was the Leopard 1 A5. 1225 of the Bundeswehr Leopards were converted to this stand. The central change was the installation of a state-of-the-art, digital fire control system, which accelerated target activation and greatly increased accuracy. This system was even more modern in parts than the fire control system of the original Leopard 2 A4, which was introduced just before the Leopard 1 A5.
Other small changes have also been made, such as: B. the installation of a thermal imaging device.
These improvements kept the Leopard 1 competitive for a long time to come. The last Leopard 1 A5s were withdrawn from Bundeswehr use in 2003, 38 years after the introduction of the first Leopard 1.
The vehicle on display here is a Leopard 1 A5. In this version, it was only used at the Augustdorf location with the PzAufklBtl 7 in the period from 1987 to 1991.
