As exhibit of the month - March 2025, we present to you the luxury item of a well-known sergeant major used in operations and on exercises.
“The Spade walk”
The older soldiers still know it, the so-called “Spade walk”!
His comrades confirm that this luxury item was actually used, and the photo in the background impressively demonstrates it. Whether his comrades were also allowed to use this chair is unfortunately unknown.
At that time, it was common practice to retreat to a small forest, find a sturdy tree to lean against, and dig a suitable hole. After "relieve oneself", everything was filled in again.
Our younger soldiers can't even imagine that anymore! After all, permanent sanitary facilities are available in the training rooms, or portable toilets are installed. Naturally, everything is more hygienic and significantly better for the environment.
This homemade version, made from a converted folding chair with a toilet seat and change bag, has been lovingly preserved as a keepsake and will be presented in 2024 as part of the newly established exhibition of Panzer Battalion 214.
